November is National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo. The annual challenge, to anyone wishing to write, is to pen 50,000 words.
In July 1999, Chris Baty, a Freelance writer in the San Francisco Bay area, started it all with twenty-one writers. A year later, to more fully take advantage of the miserable weather, NaNoWriMo moved to November. And, with the launch of the official website, One-hundred-and-forty participants from around the world too up the challenge. Currently, more than 500,000 writers test themselves each year.
NaNoWriMo is a wonderful method for getting your novel started. While some approach the task with a completely blank page and little preparation, others ready themselves by doing research and outlining. The challenge lasts thirty days from November 1st to 30th. In order to meet the goal of 50,000 words, writers must pen a minimum of 1,667 words a day.
Although there are no prizes, it is quite an achievement to complete the challenge. A feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. The knowledge that you can write each day and meet a goal.
Whether you’re taking up the challenge this year or not, flexing your writing skills is always a good idea. So, for the month of November, I’ll be posting a daily image writing prompt.
Write an opening line or scene.
Write a paragraph or short story.
Write. Write. Write.
